An Insider Says Data Centers Pay Their Whole Hookup. My Bill Went Up Anyway. Who's Lying?
Here's the short version I landed on: probably nobody's lying. The guy in the comments who does interconnection for a living is right that a data center pays to plug itself in. And your bill still went up. Those two facts live in different columns of the same spreadsheet, and once I figured out which column was which, that whole argument finally made sense.
The comment fight nobody won
I was watching one of those videos about AI data centers pushing up everybody's electric bill, and the top comments were exactly what you'd expect. Socialized costs, private profits. They take your power and then your job. Standard stuff.
Then somebody who said he does grid interconnection for a living jumped in and basically called the whole video wrong. His point: data centers pay 100% of their own hookup. Every wire, every transformer, they foot it. He wasn't rude about it. He just sounded like a person who'd actually filled out the paperwork.
And nobody answered him. The thread just moved on. So I sat there thinking, okay, one of you is wrong, and I can't tell which. Either the video's whole premise is bunk, or this guy's leaving something out. I wanted to know which.
The hookup he's talking about, and the grid you're actually paying for
Turns out the word doing all the damage is "hookup." There are two totally different costs hiding inside it, and the commenter and the video were each grabbing a different one.
Bucket one is the stuff that connects that one building to the grid. The lines running to the property, the substation gear, the transformers that only exist because that customer showed up. In a lot of markets the big customer really does pay for that directly. It's called participant funding, and the insider is dead right about it. Think of it like a new house paying to run its own water line out to the street. Nobody argues you should chip in on their plumbing.
Bucket two is everything past the street. The bigger transmission lines, the upgrades that beef up the whole regional grid so it can carry that new load without browning out the town. Historically a chunk of that gets spread across everyone in the zone, which means it lands on your bill too. And it's not a rounding error. One analysis of large-load projects in the PJM grid — the operator that covers a big slice of the East — found that out of 130 of them, only 6 made the customer pay their own connection costs directly. Six. The rest got smeared across the map.
So the insider swearing "they pay 100%" and you watching your bill climb are both true. He's describing the water line. You're paying for the reservoir.
The bucket nobody in the comments even named
Here's the part that actually got me, because it's the one neither side was talking about.
Before a data center draws a single watt, the grid has to promise the power will be there. That promise gets bought years ahead in something called a capacity market — basically everyone pays to keep enough plants on standby for the worst day of the year. When the grid operator looked at how much new demand was coming, almost all of it data centers, that standby price didn't tick up. It jumped something like ten times over in a couple of years.
Everyone in the region pays that. It's already baked into current bills. And the weird part, the part I had to reread three times to believe: you're paying to reserve power for buildings that might never get built. If a planned data center falls through, that money doesn't come back to you. You rented a spot in the parking garage for a car that never showed up, and there are no refunds.
That's the piece that makes both sides in the comment fight look small. The insider's paperwork is honest. The video's outrage is honest. And the real money moved through a door neither of them opened.
So who's lying? Watch the whole thing before you decide
After all that, my answer is kind of unsatisfying: probably neither of them. The insider isn't lying, he's just answering a narrower question than the one you're mad about. The video isn't lying either, it's pointing at buckets two and three without naming them.
And I'll be straight about what I couldn't nail down. There's a serious study out of the industry's research arm arguing that data centers actually pushed average rates down a little, because you're spreading the grid's fixed costs over way more electricity sold. Regulators at the federal level are also mid-fight right now over forcing these costs onto the companies instead of you. It genuinely depends on your state, your utility, and which year you're looking at. Anybody who tells you it's simple is selling something.
